Question 7 Evaluation ; - Felicity Bearfoot-Fallon

7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Looking back at our preliminary task, I feel that we have improved in knowledge and understanding of filming and editing,  and have allowed ourselves to explore and experiment more during the filming an editing process. We definitely have learnt more about camera techniques and angles, as well as what best fits a particular shot or scene, and how to edit it.

Pre-production:

  • Pre-production is all the beforehand planning before the actual filming takes place. This consists of, location, script writing, getting together actors, a plot, and gathering equipment. We had to make sure we did this efficiently as it would make the filming process harder later on. Because we had the experience of our preliminary task, we knew how to properly plan when it came to filming our thriller opening, and this lead to a successful process.

Production:

When filming our preliminary task, we experimented with different camera angles and shots, such as jump-cuts, close-ups and panning. Because we had learnt during the preliminary task, it made it easy for us to film for our final thriller opening. It also made it easier when deciding what different types of shots and angles to do for each scene of our opening.

 This is a close-up shot we took our the main protagonists hands to show her trying to distract herself while she's suspicious that someone is following her.

 Close-up of the main protagonist in the first part of the scene where she is talking to the camera and is confused to where she is and whats happened.

Post-production:

The post-production part mainly just consisted of editing all the footage as we had pre-planned everything else, so there wasn't any need to re shoot any scenes. We had our story board and shot list to look back on so we knew what to film and what to use when it came to the editing process, making it a lot quicker and easier.

An example of one of the techniques we used was the concept of continuity editing. We all had learnt how it worked and how to edit it so it looked smooth and the camera shots flowed into one another. It's also a really good technique to know as it makes the transitions between each shot more clean, making it look more professional and successful.
To conclude, we had researched and planned properly for our thriller opening as we had learnt to from our preliminary task. This made the process of making and producing our final product much quicker and easier, therefore making it more successful. We also have learnt more about the conventions of a thriller, which we were able to include in our own thriller opening. Overall, I think our thriller film opening called 'The Missing' was very successful as we all had the knowledge and standing of conventions and technologies of a thriller.

Question 6 Evaluation ; - Felicity Bearfoot-Fallon

Question 5 Evaluation ; - Felicity Bearfoot-Fallon

Question 4 Evaluation ; - Felicity Bearfoot-Fallon

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The target audience for our film opening is teenagers and young adults. We decided this because our main character, the protagonist is a teenage girl and we felt that the audience would be able to relate to her more. The certificate for our film would be a 15.We decided this as even though there may be some violence and some tense scenes we thought making the film have a certificate of 12 wouldn't be appropriate as it contains some violence and abusive scenes. Having the main protagonist as a young female allows audience members to connect and relate to her more.

We also did a questionnaire and found out that more boys would rather go see a thriller than girls, however this also depended on which gender played the main role. If a girl was playing the main role, more girls would more likely go see the film, whereas if the main role was a man, more boys would go see the film. Because of this, we didn't want to make our thriller seem too feminine as we had a female lead, hence why we included the idea of a male antagonist and that the girl was in danger because of him.

We attracted our audience by having a female lead, but a male antagonist, who is dark and suspicious. We also attracted our audience through clothing. Our main character is a young trendy girl, wearing converse and an arctic monkeys top, which already tells the audience what music she is into and what type of person she may be.

Question 3 Evaluation ; Felicity Bearfoot-Fallon

Question 2 Evaluation; Felicity Bearfoot-Fallon

2. How does your media product represent a particular social group?

Protagonist and Antagonist

An antagonist is a character, group of characters, institution, or concept that stands in, or represents, opposition against which the protagonist(s) must contend. In other words, an antagonist is a person or a group of people who oppose the main character(s).
The protagonist or main character is a narrative's central or primary personal figure, who comes into conflict with an opposing major character or force (called the antagonist). The audience is intended to mostly identify with the protagonist.

Protagonist

In our opening, our main character is played by a white, young teenager, as we thought this would best show the vulnerability of the character. She is taken away by the antagonist and doesn't know where she is or why he has taken her there.

We chose to have this girl as our protagonist as we felt our target audience would be able to relate to her more as she is of their age group. She is a stereotypical young, blonde, white female and is seen as the vulnerable victim.
In many films, there is this type of character, for example in the film 'Let Me In', one of the main charcters is a young, blonde female, who we see is played by Chloe Grace Moretz.

Antagonist

The antagonist in our thriller opening is a random man who is not identified, and we only see his feet and shadows of him. All the audience find out about him is that he had kidnapped the main character and locked her away, and no one knows why. We decided to have a man as the antagonist as in many thrillers we researched we found that a man playing the antagonist was more common than a woman playing the role, and this may add to the stereotype of men being stronger than woman and able to over-rule them.
The antagonist in Thrillers is stereo typically someone who is a mystery, or not often seen but definitely known about. Or they are just the 'villain' of the film. However, some thrillers play against that stereotype, such as 'Divergent', where the antagonist is played by a woman.

--> Jeanine Mathhews played by Kate Winslet in                                'Divergent'

Victims

In our thriller opening, the main character of the teenage girl is the victim. She is shown to be frightened and confused to why she has been kidnapped and doesn't know how to get help. The only thing she can do is record herself on a camera she found in the basement.

We felt that our opening represents the typical young teenage social group and attracts them too, as our thriller is based around young teenage girl who seems vulnerable. This makes the audience able to relate to her and put themselves in her position, adding to the effect and tension.

Question 1 Evaluation; Felicity Bearfoot-Fallon

Frame 1, 2 & 3:

These first three frames are of the production, entertainment and distributions companies. We made the first two our selves ( X Productions and Bearfoot Entertainment), and then added BBC Films in after. We had researched and compared many different thriller openings such as 'Taken', 'The Sixth Sense', and 'Black Swan' and then decided how to layout our companies from there.

Frame 4:

In this frame, we see the main protagonist talking to a broken camera, about how she has been kidnapped by a random stalker who she had never previously met before. She starts talking about how scared she is and looks like she is panicking, and then pushed the camera to the side as we hear the door open and footsteps coming closer towards her.

Evaluation Question 6 - Jessica Fernando (collaborated with Elona Doci)

 What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? (PAIR)

Overall i have learnt how to:
Use the canon camera and how to set the white balance so that the colour when filming is just right. Furthermore i know how to record using the camera and how to focus and zoom when i need to.

I have also learnt how to connect the camera and tripod together. I also know how to use the tripod when i am trying to pan to capture the someone moving from one area to another.

I have learnt how to use the LED lights and know to be careful not to shine them in anyone's eyes and not to drop the lights as they are very fragile.

I have learnt how to use many software's on the iMacs and how to upload onto my blog. Furthermore I have learnt skills on the iMacs like screen shooting and uploading videos of voice notes onto YouTube.

Finally i am now confident in using Final-Cut pro and know how to edit as-well as add in images, videos and music weather it be to create a thriller opening or just a random video.

Throughout the whole process there have been many things I have found difficult like using the cameras and iMacs but over time i really got used to everything and found it a lot easier. One of the main things i must remember is to make sure the white balance is always set and the camera is always focused.

Evaluation Question 5 - (Jessica Fernando)

Evaluation Question 4 - Jessica Fernando (collaborated with Elona Doci)

Who would be the audience for your media product? Include audience feedback. (PAIR)

For our film 'The Missing' we decided as a group that the target audience would be for both males and females of the ages around 15-25. The reason for this is because through audience research we found that our film appealed to both males and females. When explaining our story line to the audience both male and female audience members were intrigued to know why the girl had been kidnapped and more importantly who kidnapped the young girl.
We decide that this would be a good age range as these are the ages where people are most likely to have free time and watch films.
Furthermore, we also did previous audience research in order to see what audience would be best for our film, the research included:
Film certificates to see who are film would be appropriate for.
Interviews with teenagers aged 16-18 asking them what their views were on thrillers and about what films they watch and how often.
We also researched thriller films to see the different story lines and to see what their target audience.
After getting all the information together we created an audience profile showing who our target audience may be.

Age Certificate research
Interviews
Thriller film research
Film listings

 To make sure that our film is successful we had to think about what our main characters would look like and how old they would be. We looked at some other thrillers some of which are above. In all 'Divergent', 'Lucy' and 'Black Swan' the main characters are all young women which would appeal to our target audience as we expect them to be of a young age. From this we decided that our main character would be a young teenage girl, we thought this would appeal to our target audience as they may find it easier to relate to a character of their age range.

The way in which we have tried to really target our audience has been through creating a main character that the audience can relate to and like through out the whole film. We also decided that our film would be more modern and up to date so that our audience feel like they can relate to the timing and the content of the film, we have done this by using a corner shop as our main location within the first two minutes of the film. Furthermore we have made sure that our main character dresses as today's generation would and also acts and speaks the way in which the younger generation would. In doing all of this we are hoping that our film will really attract the audience from ages 15-25 but we also hope that they can relate to our films and the problems that occur.

Audience Feedback on our thriller opening: We asked some young teenagers what they thought of our 2 minute Thriller opening:

Holly Clayton 17 - 'I liked the fact that the main character is a young girl as this gives me something in common with her and I feel i can relate to her, I also feel i can understand how scared she must be and I also feel sympathy towards her within the opening scene.'

Cristina Barrasa 18 - 'I think the opening of the thriller is really good, it had me on the edge of my seat not only because i was worry for the girls safety but because i was also super intrigued to know who the kidnapper is!'

Aaron Richard 17 - 'One thing that really drew me into the film was the part were the young girl was explaining what had happened to her, it made me feel really tense and scared for her and when she then panicked because she heard her kidnapper coming, I also begun to panic and in my head i was thinking 'quickkkkk hide the camera comeeee on hurry up' I think the whole 2 minutes were really successful in creating suspense and mystery but also having me quite worried.'

Evaluation Questions 1-7

1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real products?

These are the 9 frames I chose from our thriller opening. They conform to normal film openings as they contain the production company logo, distributor, the title of the film and in frames 7, 8 & 9, we can see the credits fading in and out. This conforms to normal film openings as they also contain these. I found this out when I did my research using Art of The Title and analysed the opening scene to 'Fight Club' (Fincher, 1999)
Our opening sequence also contains a variety of different camera shots. In frame 8 we can see a close up of the characters hands. In frames 3 and 7 we can see the use of mid-shots. This use of different shots helps to build suspense and highlight key points.

Our production logo comes it at the start of the opening. This conforms to other film openings as they also tend to have the production logo at the start. Our logo is simple but effective.
The font we used for out title and credits is also simple but bold enough to attract attention and create effect.
The use of dark colours and black and white also conforms to thriller openings. It helps to create the sense of mystery and enigma.
The music that is used throughout our opening also helps to create this enigma and tension. The timing of the music that comes it at frame 6 helps to create the illusion that the beat is the heartbeat of our character. This, we thought, was a create way to create tension.

 - Frame 8: Close Up
                                       Frame 1: Production Company -
- Frame 5: Title

                                  Frame 3: Mid-shot/Rule of thirds -

2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our main character was played by a teenage girl/young adult. We decided to use someone in between the ages of 16-18 so that it will appeal to our audience more as they can feel like it relates to them/pretend it is them in this situation. The use of a teenage girl will also make the audience sympathise with her and paint her as a 'damsel in distress'. Using a female protagonist and male antagonist follows the convention of most thriller films.

From previous research we found what teenage girls, age 15+, stereotypically tend to dress and act like;

The protagonist is the first, and only, character visually introduced in our opening. This suggests that she is of significance and has a big part to play within the whole film. Introducing her straight away leaves the audience wondering who she is and why it was her that was kidnapped. It leaves the audience asking questions, which is key within thriller openings.
Throughout the first part of the opening she is constantly talking about a man that has taken her. We do not know who he is, why or where he has taken her. We do not see his face or hear his voice, only hear his footsteps. This again adds to the sense of mystery and leaves the audience asking questions, right from the start.

When the girl is talking to the camera she is, of course, very scared and confused, as any teenage girl in this situation would be.

Our character has similarities to characters from other thrillers, such as Cici from 'Scream 2' (Craven, 1997)

They are both:
Female
Blonde hair
Caucasian
Middle class
Young adults

Our main character has long blonde hair. The fact that she is female and has long hair adds to her vulnerability as she is physically weaker than males, and her hair being long means that it would be easier for her to be 'dragged' somewhere by her hair.
 We can see that a lot of victims within films do infact have long blonde hair;

We were able to stereotype 'young adult female' through our use of mise-en-scene.
First of all the clothing. Our character is wearing jeans, a band t-shirt and converses. This is what a typical teenager would wear. It is also the clothes that the character already had, showing again it is what real teenagers actually wear. She is also wearing a casual jacket and a bag, suggesting she is just out casually going to the shops, wearing everyday clothes.

Next the hair and make up. Our character's make up is very subtle. A lot of teenage girls tend to wear makeup, but when they are just going to the shop or somewhere they may not wear a lot. Her hair is not styled, it is just down and flowing. This again is how a teenager would casually wear their hair.

We can see that this is how teenagers have been presented in other thriller films, such as Chloe-Grace Mortez in 'Carrie 2013'

From this picture we can see that Chloe is also wearing a band t-shirt. Her make up is very subtle and her hair is also down and not styled.
This shows that we have been able to represent teenage girls/young female adults, as this is how they have been presented in other films.

From the audience research that we carried out in the research for our thriller opening, we found that our ideal audience would be for teenagers/young adults starting from age 15 going onwards. I didn't want to cap the age for our audience as I feel thrillers can be enjoyed by people from any age. However, if I were to cap the age I would say it would be suitable for people up to the age of 25, as 15-25 are the prime ages for cinema goers.

When Felicity and I interviewed peers at my school, there was a mixture between both boys and girls. So, we can concluded that thriller films can be enjoyed by both genres.

Interviews with sixth formers:

However, in the bottom video, we can hear Jack (right) say that he doesn't like going to the cinema due to other people ruining the experience for him by being too loud or excited. Therefore, from this we can assume that the older generation wouldn't like to go to the cinema as they may get annoyed at others being too loud and distracting and wouldn't enjoy the experience, so the older generation would not be the right audience for our thriller opening.

As well as our thriller opening not being appropriate for the older generation, I also believe it is not suitable for the younger generation. This is because younger children tend to prefer different genres of films, mainly family and comedy, and they tend to prefer animated films for the very young.

As well as them preferring other genres of films, I feel that the storyline that is in thriller films is more suitable for an older audience, and the younger generation may not even understand what is happening. For scenes that build up tension and make people jump, or may even be a bit gruesome, this might scare younger children too much that they don't enjoy it. These points are especially true for more intense and gruesome thriller films, such as 'Law Abiding Citizen' (Gary Gray, 2009)

Therefore I believe that the certificate for our thriller opening should be a 15:

'No-one under 15 is allowed to see a 15 film at the cinema or buy/rent a 15 rated video. 15 rated works are not suitable for children under 15 years of age.'

5: How did you attract/address your audience?

To try and attract our audience to our film, I decided to make a Twitter account for our film. I decided to do this as most people in our audience would use social media sites, such as Twitter, and use them frequently.

I also included a website for a film in the bio of our account. If this website was active, this is where I would publish lots of information about our thriller film, trying to promote it as much as I could and make the audience excited to see it.

From earlier research, I found that most people tend to find out about what new films are coming out through social media sites, especially Twitter. This is because, depending on the people and other film accounts they are already following, accounts of new films that are similar to these will come up as suggested accounts to follow. If there friends are following film accounts, they may tell each other about them, or may retweet them onto each others timelines.

By me following other thriller movie accounts, and following other followers of thriller accounts, it is more likely for fans of thriller movies to see my account, and therefore know that a new thriller film is coming out, maybe even follow me back for new updates about the film.

Using twitter accounts has deemed to be very useful for other films, getting them lots of followers who probably went and saw the film, generating the film producers a lot of profit, such as for:

The Fault In Our Stars;

The Hunger Games;

Star Wars;

and The Avengers;

We can see from these 4 Hollywood films that having a Twitter account to promote your film and attract your audience's attention can get you thousands, even millions of followers, who, hopefully, would all go and watch the film.

However, for less popular, Uk independent films, having a twitter account may not lead to many people following your account, as we can see with:

Monsters;

and Night Bus;

When we compare the two, Hollywood films have a significantly higher amount of followers compared to the UK independents. This is because they can afford to advertise their films in many other ways, such as TV adverts, billboards, magazines etc.

Posters and adshels are both great ways of advertising a film. Our audience will see posters and adshels everyday on their way to school/work. This would be a great way to attract the attention of our audience, however due to limited funds and lack of government permission, we would not be able to print a lot of posters and put them up all over the country. Due to our limited budget, we cannot have a very big marketing campaign, therefore it will be harder for us to attract our audience.

Our title also attracts our audience. It is simple yet effective. From the opening, we already know that she has been taken by someone. The title 'The Missing' suggests that she is not the only person to go missing. Again, this leaves the audience wondering who else could go missing, and whether they will escape or not.
During the actual film opening, we managed to attract our audience by immediately introducing our protagonist. This left the audience guessing and asking questions right from the start. The lack of information and knowledge she reveals at the start also leaves the audience wondering and wanting to know what will happen next. The storyline is mysterious which will appeal to our target audience.

By using someone of similar age to our audience to play our leading character, this will also hopefully keep the audience interested through the entire film.
